Plain English Week coming up

Plain English Power

Next week, 14-18 September, is Plain English Week in New Zealand. The grand finale will be the WriteMark New Zealand Plain English Awards on Friday 18 September.

We ask you to make a few small gestures during Plain English Week.

  1. Boldly say the magic words: “What do you mean?”
  2. If you're asked to read a document that you can't understand easily, ask for a rewrite in plain English. Someone is wasting your time!
  3. If you notice a public document that you can't understand easily, send us a copy. We’d like to help.

Is there something similar in Australia? It’s a fantastic idea!

Lisa, I don’t think the Australians have done this yet—or anyone else, to my knowledge. But I intend to tell them about it when I speak at the 2009 PLAIN Conference next month. Or you could start one up all by yourself! Let’s have Plain English Weeks all over the world. How about every week?
