Tip: Keep formatting simple in emails

In email, keep formatting simple. Contented.com tip.

Beware of using fancy formatting in your emails. (Except for the very occasional use of bold, maybe.) Don't decorate your text: just say what you mean.

Emphasise your point by saying less: then your point will be noticed.

Leave text decoration to the experts!

Do you have an urge to make some text bold and big and red?

Here's why this is a bad idea (unless you are an expert designer).

  • it distracts from your message
  • some readers do not see your formatting: they've switched off the formatting button, and all emails look the same to them
  • some readers hate your formatting and find it aggressive
  • it probably looks ugly anyway. :-(
