Next week, 14-18 September, is Plain English Week in New Zealand. The grand finale will be the WriteMark New Zealand Plain English Awards on Friday 18 September.
We ask you to make a few small gestures during Plain English Week.
- Boldly say the magic words: “What do you mean?”
- If you're asked to read a document that you can't understand easily, ask for a rewrite in plain English. Someone is wasting your time!
- If you notice a public document that you can't understand easily, send us a copy. We’d like to help.

Lisa, I don’t think the Australians have done this yet—or anyone else, to my knowledge. But I intend to tell them about it when I speak at the 2009 PLAIN Conference next month. Or you could start one up all by yourself! Let’s have Plain English Weeks all over the world. How about every week?

Is there something similar in Australia? It’s a fantastic idea!
